Married couple navigates murky legal ground after one partner has sex change
|
The couple stayed together even as Howden`s husband Michael underwent a sex-change operation that transformed him into Mikayla. That surgery also landed them in a murky area where gender and law collide. Their marriage once between a man and a woman is now between a woman and a woman despite a ban on such unions in 40 states including New Hampshire. Brockville Recorder World News |

New Secretary of Education ignores tolerance
|
Bush knows, he has to reunite the deeply divided USA again. His new Secretary of Education is appearently not able to recognize that. Her first act in office was to pull fundings from a cartoon show promoting understanding. But understanding is needed. As if one could (re)unite without understanding diversity! Therefore Winnie Stachelberg, Political Director of the HRC, is upset. |

Opinion: Gays haven't been mentioned
|
Germany - At the official commemoration all the victims of the Holocaust have been remembered. All victims. Really? Jews, of course, have been mentioned. Sinti and Roma also. That has been said in the News. Gays haven't been mentioned in. Not in the Media. Not in Germany or Austria.
It appears that Gays and Lesbians are still noticed as -- abnormal. Of course, noone would agree to that in the public - apart from some nuts. But what about the subconscious? Do "they" really think we are a normal part of the human society? To answer that question, just have a look around. Not a glance. A look. Not only in your place but the world. Only a few weeks ago two Nigerians, both of them gay, have been stoned to death -- for being gay. That's not what you do with the people you like. Never heard of mobbing for being gay? Kicked out for? Oppressed for being what you are - gay?? "They" may say they have accepted us. Most of them lie. There are just a few people i would believe in that case (Don't be upset. There are more than 6 billion people living on this planet). Ask a teenager in the US, in the UK, in Sweden or in Germany. One that wants to come out. Of course they are full of fear because of the warm welcome from their class mates. "Faggot" is the insult most used - not only in schools. That's of course because we are a really beloved part of society. This is real life, not only the "political correctness". We have to fight for some more years, and we have to do so not less, but harder. If we meet our goals, one of the signs will be that Gays are mentioned in the media as victims on such an Event like I discribed on the top.

Resounding Defeat of Discrimination a Victory for Maine and the Country
|
WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign celebrated today's vote by Maine citizens ensuring protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. To help defeat today's ballot initiative that would have repealed the state non-discrimination law, the Human Rights Campaign provided a large amount of on-the-ground staff, significant fundraising assistance, media assistance, strategic assistance, volunteer recruitment and more than $150,000 this year alone in financial contributions to Maine Won't Discriminate, including financing their field efforts, early polling and seed money for early staffing. "Understanding overcame fear and fairness overcame discrimination in Maine," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "We have been enormously proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with statewide leaders in this fight, since day one through today's victory. Winning these campaigns has always been about strengthening the foundation of understanding. We're so proud to have played such a big role in laying that groundwork. Mainers today sent a strong signal that discrimination has no place in their state. We congratulate the voters, volunteers and hard-working team at Maine Won't Discriminate for this victory."
"The Human Rights Campaign was an essential partner in this fight from day one. The Human Rights Campaign's early and substantial support was the key to making this victory possible tonight," said Jesse Connolly, campaign manager for Maine Won't Discriminate. "Education has always been a long-term effort and this vote shows that the longer the conversation can happen, the better off fairness will be in the end. Mainers have been building understanding for years now and today is the culmination of those conversations."
HRC has been working with Maine Won't Discriminate since the first time this repeal made the ballots. This year, HRC provided more than $150,000 his year alone to defeat the referendum and significant staff resources. By Election Day, more than 25 HRC staff members will have traveled to Maine to work directly with the campaign.
The sexual orientation and gender identity inclusive non-discrimination bill passed both houses of the Maine Legislature in March of 2005 with strong bipartisan margins and was signed into law by Democratic Gov. John Baldacci. This was the third attempt to repeal the measure and the first time voters approved the law.
Maine becomes the final New England state and the 16th state overall to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and the 6th state to outlaw discrimination based on gender identity. For a map of these states, go to: www.hrc.org/stateantidiscriminationmap. |

Divisive Politics To Blame For Discrimination In Texas
|
Joe Solmonese, HRC President
WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign said today's vote denying marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships to same-sex couples will seriously harm thousands of Texas families. "Education is a long-term effort that cynical politics can never stop," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "These amendments are part of a long-standing effort by the extreme right to eliminate any legal recognition for gay people and our families. The volunteers and hard-working team at "No Nonsense in November" should be proud of their work against this amendment. This fight for fairness isn't over and we won't give up." Texas joins 17 other states with constitutional amendments denying marriage to same-sex couples. The amendment in Texas not only prohibits marriage but also threatens civil unions and domestic partnerships that are widely supported by most Americans. In addition to activating over 30,000 members across the state, HRC and its Texas leadership contributed over $100,000 to the "No Nonsense in November" campaign. Three HRC staff members have been in Texas to work with the campaign, helping to turn out the vote, recruit volunteers and activate the student vote.
