When I saw the slogan at the anti-gay protest in Krasnodar that organisers of next year’s Moscow Pride want revenge for fascist’s defeat over 60 years ago, I was not just amazed – I was furious.
Yet, as a reporter I am not supposed to let out this fury in my news report. And as an activist I could also do nothing as it would have spoiled my mission to Krasnodar.
You can guess what I felt on Saturday evening when I was confronted by the placard proclaiming “Organisers of the parade of pederasts in May 2006 want to get a revenge for the defeat of fascists in May 1945” when I tell you that my grandfather was killed by the fascists in 1942. |

HIV assaults the brain

A study in which 26 patients with an AIDS diagnosis were given sophisticated brain scans has uncovered results that the scientist in charge of the investigation called “terrifying”.

Protest after Iraq leader slams gays

A protest will be held in London tomorrow by gay activists Outrage, following comments from Iraqi religious leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani that suggest he supports the killing of gay men.
The protest comes after comments were published on al-Sistani’s website, which called for the killing of lesbian and gay men “in the most serve way”, according to Outrage translations.

WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign celebrated today's vote by Maine citizens ensuring protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. To help defeat today's ballot initiative that would have repealed the state non-discrimination law, the Human Rights Campaign provided a large amount of on-the-ground staff, significant fundraising assistance, media assistance, strategic assistance, volunteer recruitment and more than $150,000 this year alone in financial contributions to Maine Won't Discriminate, including financing their field efforts, early polling and seed money for early staffing.

HRC has been working with Maine Won't Discriminate since the first time this repeal made the ballots. This year, HRC provided more than $150,000 his year alone to defeat the referendum and significant staff resources. By Election Day, more than 25 HRC staff members will have traveled to Maine to work directly with the campaign.
The sexual orientation and gender identity inclusive non-discrimination bill passed both houses of the Maine Legislature in March of 2005 with strong bipartisan margins and was signed into law by Democratic Gov. John Baldacci. This was the third attempt to repeal the measure and the first time voters approved the law.
Maine becomes the final New England state and the 16th state overall to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and the 6th state to outlaw discrimination based on gender identity. For a map of these states, go to:

Divisive Politics To Blame For Discrimination In Texas

WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign said today's vote denying marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships to same-sex couples will seriously harm thousands of Texas families.
"Education is a long-term effort that cynical politics can never stop," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "These amendments are part of a long-standing effort by the extreme right to eliminate any legal recognition for gay people and our families. The volunteers and hard-working team at "No Nonsense in November" should be proud of their work against this amendment. This fight for fairness isn't over and we won't give up."
Texas joins 17 other states with constitutional amendments denying marriage to same-sex couples. The amendment in Texas not only prohibits marriage but also threatens civil unions and domestic partnerships that are widely supported by most Americans.
In addition to activating over 30,000 members across the state, HRC and its Texas leadership contributed over $100,000 to the "No Nonsense in November" campaign. Three HRC staff members have been in Texas to work with the campaign, helping to turn out the vote, recruit volunteers and activate the student vote.
